Establishing the Visual Tone

Working on the Beats by Dre x A$AP Ferg x James Harden BTS Sizzle, my role as a graphic designer focused on photo filter manipulation began with interpreting the raw footage into a cohesive visual language. The project, edited by Scott Nichols, centered around high-energy, culture-driven storytelling rooted in music and sport. I approached the visuals with a goal to amplify intensity—leaning into deep contrast, saturated shadows, and selective highlights to mirror the bold, premium identity of Beats. The filters weren’t just aesthetic—they became a narrative tool to unify different environments and personalities into one consistent visual tone.

Process

Building Layers Through
Filter Manipulation

My workflow revolved around layering multiple treatments rather than relying on a single LUT. Starting with base color correction, I pushed skin tones to remain natural while allowing backgrounds to shift toward stylized hues—often cooler blues or warmer reds depending on the emotional beat of the scene. I incorporated grain, light leaks, and subtle texture overlays inspired by modern post-production toolkits commonly used in motion design. This multi-layered approach gave the footage a tactile, cinematic feel, enhancing depth while maintaining clarity on key subjects like the product and talent.

Execution

Enhancing Motion and Energy

As the edit progressed, the filters evolved dynamically with the pacing of the sizzle. Fast-cut sequences were paired with sharper contrast and punchier saturation, while slower moments leaned into softer gradients and controlled glow effects. This helped reinforce rhythm and musicality throughout the piece. The manipulation of light and color also emphasized movement—highlighting sweat, motion blur, and environmental lighting to create a sense of realism heightened by design. Every frame was treated as a still composition, ensuring that even in motion, the visuals held strong graphic integrity.

Outcome

Creating a Cohesive,
Premium Visual Identity

The final result was a visually unified piece that elevated raw behind-the-scenes footage into a polished, brand-driven experience. Through intentional photo filter manipulation, the project bridged authenticity with stylization—keeping the grit of BTS content while aligning with Beats’ high-end aesthetic. The consistency in color grading and texture created a recognizable visual system that could scale across frames and formats. Ultimately, the filters became more than an effect—they acted as the connective tissue that transformed fragmented footage into a cohesive, impactful story.
